The Problem with the Word Smart

Picture the kid in your sixth grade class who got called smart. Odds are they raised their hand fast. They remembered state capitals. They scored well on tests with one right answer. They probably weren't the kid who built the best treehouse, or the one everyone went to when they were sad, or the one who could tell from across the cafeteria that something was off with their best friend.

The word smart got attached to a very specific skill: the ability to retrieve information quickly and answer questions correctly. That's a real skill. It's also one of maybe eight or ten different things we should be calling intelligence. And it isn't even the most useful one.

Where the Word Came From

The way we measure intelligence today started with a French psychologist named Alfred Binet in 1905. The French government asked him to find a way to identify schoolchildren who needed extra help. He built a test that measured what schools were teaching, which was reading, arithmetic, and the ability to follow instructions. The whole point of the test was to predict who would do well in school.

That test got picked up, modified, and turned into the IQ test. A measurement built to predict performance in a specific institution became the way we ranked human cognitive ability. The tail started wagging the dog about a hundred years ago and we've never quite recovered.

So when we say someone is smart, what we usually mean is something close to "would have done well on Binet's 1905 test." That's a narrow target. It's also the wrong target for most of what adults actually do.

What Else Counts as Intelligence

In 1983, Howard Gardner at Harvard published Frames of Mind and proposed that there are at least eight distinct types of intelligence. Verbal-linguistic. Logical-mathematical. Visual-spatial. Bodily-kinesthetic. Musical-rhythmic. Interpersonal. Intrapersonal. Naturalistic. He later added two more: existential and moral.

You can argue with the framework. A lot of cognitive scientists do. But the underlying point is hard to dispute. The mechanic who can listen to your engine for ten seconds and tell you exactly what's wrong is doing something most physicists can't do. The therapist who can read a room in two minutes and know who's about to walk out is operating on a level of perception that doesn't show up on the SAT. The kid who can hold a complicated melody in his head and play it back on a piano he's never seen before isn't using the part of the brain that solves logic puzzles.

None of those people are smart in the way the word usually gets used. All of them are doing something the rest of us can't.

The One That Actually Predicts Success

If you had to pick a single trait to predict whether someone would thrive at work, in relationships, or as a leader, the research has a clear answer. It isn't IQ. It's emotional intelligence.

Daniel Goleman's 1995 book on emotional intelligence kicked off three decades of research that has held up well. Self-awareness, self-regulation, empathy, and social skill predict career success more reliably than cognitive ability does. A 2020 meta-analysis in Psychological Bulletin found that emotional intelligence predicted academic performance even after controlling for IQ and the big five personality traits. The Korn Ferry Institute found that leaders high in emotional self-awareness had teams that performed at a high level 92% of the time. Leaders low in emotional self-awareness created negative team climates 78% of the time.

That's a massive gap. It also doesn't show up on any test we give kids in school.

Then There's Grit

Angela Duckworth at Penn ran a study on cadets at West Point. The Army has spent decades trying to predict which cadets will make it through the brutal first summer of training. They have SAT scores. They have physical fitness scores. They have leadership ratings and class rank. None of those predicted who would quit and who would stay.

Duckworth gave the cadets a twelve-question survey on something she called grit, which she defined as sustained passion and effort toward a long-term goal. Grit predicted who finished better than any other measure, including IQ. She found the same pattern with National Spelling Bee competitors, with Ivy League undergraduates, and with sales professionals.

The kids who finish what they start aren't always the ones who score highest on the math placement test. Sometimes they are. Often they aren't. Either way, the trait that gets them across the finish line is a different trait than the one we measure when we call someone smart.

And Creative Intelligence

Standardized tests reward convergent thinking, which is the ability to find the one correct answer. The opposite skill is divergent thinking, which is the ability to generate many possible answers to an open question.

E. Paul Torrance built a test of divergent thinking in 1966 and ran a longitudinal study on the kids who took it. He followed them for fifty years. Their scores on his test predicted adult creative achievement, including patents, publications, and entrepreneurial success, better than their childhood IQ scores did.

Think about who actually makes things. The novelists. The architects. The chefs who invent dishes. The engineers who design the bridge no one had thought of yet. They're not the kids who scored a 1600. Some of them did. Most didn't. They are the kids who could come up with twenty uses for a paperclip while their classmates were still trying to figure out the right one.

What This Means for the Word

Smart is shorthand. Like most shorthand, it works fine until you have to make a decision. When you're hiring someone, when you're picking a partner, when you're trying to figure out if your kid is going to be okay, "smart" doesn't tell you much. It tells you how they would do on a test that almost nobody gives adults.

The real questions are different. Can they read other people? Can they sit with a hard problem long enough to solve it? Can they generate options when the rulebook runs out? Can they tell when their own mood is off and adjust before they ruin a meeting? Can they figure out an unfamiliar tool by using it? Can they remember what someone needs without being asked twice?

Those are all forms of intelligence. The research is clear that they matter as much as the kind that lights up a vocabulary test, and in most adult settings they matter more.

I don't think we should retire the word smart. It's useful when it's accurate. But it shouldn't be the highest compliment we have. The kid who remembers everything is impressive. So is the kid who can build the treehouse, the kid who can read a room, and the kid who finishes things she said she'd finish. They're all smart. They're just smart in ways the test wasn't designed to see.

If we keep treating one of those skills as the real one, we'll keep raising adults who think they peaked in fourth grade and adults who think they were never any good at anything. Both groups are wrong. The first kind got too much credit for one narrow skill. The second kind never had their skills measured by anyone who knew how to look.
